Money emotions are they sabotaging your financial success? Looks, money is emotional for women right? Yes … but the same is true for men. That’s why it is important to deal with your money emotions.
According to author Barbara Stanny. Barara says she grew up relying on my father (the “R” of H&R Block), then my husband, to manage her money.
But early in her marriage, she found out her husband was a compulsive gambler. And here’s the insane part — she continued to let him manage the money because that’s how scared and intimidated she was by money.
Money Emotions And Making Changes
It wasn’t until a devastating financial crisis became a personal wake-up call that things changed for Barbara. As she writes, “I got tax bills for over $1m for illegal deals my ex got us in. He’d left the country, I didn’t have $1m, and my father wouldn’t lend me the money. I had three daughters — one just a baby, and I was not going to raise them on the street. That’s when I knew I had to get smart. And I did.”
Now she “coaches” other women on building wealth and letting go of their fears about money. In a recent article she writes about how money is emotional for women. But money is also emotional for men too.
Here’s her article.
I’ve got a beef with the financial industry. And the financial media. And most financial books.
They are preoccupied with the Outer Work of money while ignoring the Inner Work. This myopic perspective occurs for one reason.
Financial education has been created mostly by men.
A few years ago, I was talking to a male pollster who was conducting a Harris Interactive survey for a major financial firm. He had just come from a series of focus groups.
“What did you learn?” I asked him.
“You know,” he responded with surprise, “Money is a very emotional topic for women!”
Money Emotions: You Could Sabotage Your Success
I had to laugh. Like this was brand new information (which, of course, it is to most men)?
But as I learned from personal experience—unless you deal with your psyche, you’ll likely sabotage your success.
If you’re stuck, overwhelmed, or indecisive, the solution rarely lies in doing more Outer Work. The key is dealing with your internal blocks, limiting beliefs, and early decisions.
Until you consciously examine your early programming and intentionally change it, you’ll be like puppets pulled by the strings of your past.
