We always talk about celebrating other women. Well, this past weekend we were lucky enough to celebrate a dear friend and panelist, Sarah Perry. Sarah’s book,Sand in My Sandwich: And Other Motherhood Messes I’m Learning to Love, was finally released after months of anticipation. I have to say, nothing feels better than to see others succeeding, especially friends and family.
Sarah and her family have become my family. I have known them for almost five years now. I watched her children grow up, quite literally as I babysat them for years. I was there when Santa delivered a mega trampoline magically into the backyard. I was there when their beloved family dog passed away. I was there for many poopy diapers and stomach bugs. I was there for the three greatest children but I was also there for the two best parents.
Sarah and her husband, Matt, have truly become like second parents. They have celebrated my graduations and accomplishments, as well inviting me to celebrate their own. I have also witnessed sad moments like the loss of a job or brother.
What I love so much about this family is how honest they are about their life. I mean truly, deeply, transparently honest. They are not just open and honest about the good, but also the bad. It is hard. It does not feel good, but they are unashamed. Matt will honestly tell you about his loss of temper or the fight him and Sarah are currently battling. Sarah will tell you she would rather be at the barn than with her kids some days.
Sarah chronicles her life, honestly. Sand in My Sandwich: And Other Motherhood Messes I’m Learning to Love is hilarious, humble, bittersweet and bighearted. We cannot recommend this book enough, this family, or this woman. She shows us all that we never have to compromise our own dreams, like becoming an author. Perseverance and patience really pays off.
