The Internet is filled with writing-for-hire opportunities, offering you many ways to make money as a writer
Some pay great fees, others not so much.
Let’s first talk about the places to make money as writer that don’t pay as much. They are called content mills. A content mill is basically a website where clients post work aimed at freelance writers.
They provide quick, easy work but pay very little, which is why they are known as content mills.
It works like this. The client posts details about a writing assignment and, depending on the content mill, will place it up for bid, put it into a pool of writers, or assign it directly to a writer.
The content mill is what pays the writer for the work, and the client funds that work by paying the content mill first.
But the amount you receive is usually low.
Fortunately there are better ways to make money as a writer then content mills.
Better Ways to Make Money as A Writer
One of those ways is using freelance marketplaces.
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.Freelance marketplaces act as a medium between you and clients and take part of your earnings in the form of fees.
But freelancers can search specifically for the type of work they want and what they want to earn.
Clients post their assignments or jobs to the marketplace and freelancers bid on them, while sending along their profiles, resumes, and portfolios.
The client sifts through the applications and then chooses the freelancer he or she wants to hire.
I’d like to offer a word of caution here:
Don’t apply for writing jobs that are out of your league just because the pay is good. For example, if you write articles related to pets, a client wanting articles on personal finance is probably wondering why you’ve applied to the job.
Another great place to look for paid writing assignments is job boards.
Job boards usually have more picky requirements than those from freelance marketplaces, so it’s good to have at least a few articles already in place for experience.
The good news is the number of jobs listed on freelance writing job boards grows daily, and many jobs are always looking for fresh faces, not just seasoned writers.
And the third way to make money as a writer is making use of websites that accept submission.
While you’ve surely stumbled across the “Write for Us” tab on a website, you might think you don’t have enough writing experience to impress an editor with an article submission.
But that’s not true.
If your article catches their attention, you absolutely have a shot at getting published. And even better news is these websites pay writers for accepted articles, without any expertise requirements. And they pay well.
More Content Means More Writing Opportunities
Just remember the amount of content on the Internet is growing.
According to the International Data Center, the amount of worldwide data (also known as the datasphere) will grow as much as 61% by the year 2025.
A zettabyte is a trillion gigabytes. Now if you put all of that data onto a bunch of BluRay discs, you’d have a stack high enough to get you to the moon and back 23 times.
That data comes in all forms … from home made family videos, movies that we stream, emails we write, text messages we send, and the articles we read.
And therein lies a golden opportunity for you to make money as a writer by supplying what the Internet needs most: More content.
